While there are many different types of fear I believe the fear of failure may be the most debilitating since it keeps us from taking action.
Do you want to start your own company but doubt you have what it takes? That’s the fear of failure.
Do you want to get back into shape but, deep inside, know you’ll probably give up after a few weeks… so what’s the point in even starting? Perhaps you’ve been at it for a few months but fear that pull-up bar so you’re doing your very best to avoid it. That’s also the fear of failure.
Or, perhaps you want to stop confessing the same sin month after month but you know there’s no way you’ll be able to consistently say no when temptation whispers in your fatigued ear late at night. That, my brothers and sisters in Christ, is the fear of failure.
So, when we’re wracked with fear, unable to move, how should we respond?
Well, as it turns out, I recently came across a powerful video by a man named Jocko Willink who addressed this very question. Mr. Willink is a former US Navy Seal and one of the most intense motivators I’ve come across. Now I don’t know Mr. Willink’s religious affiliation and, to be clear, I don’t always agree with everything he says and especially how he says it.
But, when it comes to overcoming the fear of failure I was quite taken by his advice. You see, Jocko actually turns things around and encourages us to not only fear failure… he believes we should, in fact, become horrified of failure.
I’ll let Jocko elaborate in this short 2-minute video below (if you’re reading this via email you may need to click through to our website to see the video). Please note there is one curse word in the video… sorry about that… when Mike and I begin to make our own videos I promise we won’t swear!
Until next time… be holy, eat clean, and do more push-ups!
